Chef Knife: Factors to Be Considered While Buying

Instead of a $3-5 local knife, buying a chef knife is relatively more rigid. Because of the high price (generally) and expectations – people often make mistakes buying a qualified chef knife.

If you too are concerned about the factors to be considered before buying a chef knife, follow this buyer’s guide. However, you’ve to look upon other vital factors besides the price. Some of those factors are:

Premium Quality

Chef knife will leave all other regular knives to feel like plastic. Knives from Victorinox and other prestigious brands feel buttery smooth while cutting, chopping, mincing & dicing.

Gentle Grip

Grip plays a crucial role in spotting a quality chef knife. If it’s a slippery handle and interrupts you constantly, somebody just sold you a lousy chef knife.

Edge Durability

Knife often needs honing daily – typically after 1 to 2 weeks of using. Budget & quality chef knife won’t lose its sharp edge even after one week of usage.

Blade Width

Choosing the wide blade is an ideal choice – because it comes with many benefits, including handling & cutting food quickly.

However, you can buy a mid-sized blade knife if you’re aiming at specific food only that requires a mid-sized blade.

Victorinox Fibrox Pro Chef’s Knife

From specs to price perspective, this is one of the excellent budget chef knives available in the market. I tested this knife for several weeks to spot the ups & downs of this knife.

However, I’m positively amazed by the performance. In this Victorinox Fibrox Pro Chef’s Knife review, I’ll be sharing its features along with Pros & Cons as the bottom line.

So let’s get started.

Design: Suitable for Home & Commercial Space

The overall look of this chef knife is decent. It might not be the prettiest, but it’s not the ugliest as well. Commercial spaces like restaurants don’t need a good looking knife; they need a knife that performs smoothly without breaking or bending.

Also, Fibrox pro is pretty enough for home use as well. This budget knife left some of the high-end knives in shame – with its practical design.

In summary, this is a slightly good looking knife. If you’re looking for extra beauty, you may need to spend more than $35 for sure.

Blade: Sharp with Decent HRC

This stainless steel blade sturdy enough to encounter all food types available in your kitchen. The blade’s HRC is 56 – which is decent & expected.

It’s a no brainer that, the higher the HRC, the harder the edge is.

This 8″ knife is sharp & usable in every condition – wet & dry. Working in the down position is more comfortable as it’s a heavy tip knife. Also, this 52mm wide blade was of great use while cutting and transferring foods into pot/dish.

I’ve used this knife for cutting and slicing vegetables, tomatoes, freshly baked bread & meat – raw & cooked. Overall, the 210mm blade performed well, and I am satisfied.

Handle: Non-Slippery & Comfy

The slippery and sticky handle is the nightmare for any chef – home or professional. Thanks to Victorinox for providing an excellent non-slippery and comfy grip with this budget knife.

The handle is featuring a rough surface with slightly textured feeling – helps to give the best grip possible.

Some chefs prefer using knives barehanded as they want to ‘feel’ the cutting & chopping period. For them, this solid & textured knife handle can be a great companion for sure.

Honing: A Must for Every Knife

Over time every knife gets dull and needs sharpening and the fantastic part with this knife is, it was too sharp out of the box.

I didn’t feel the necessity of honing it even after 6 days of usage.

However, knife-edge needs sharpening after a week of heavy use.You check our blog to know in detailed ‘how to sharpen your kitchen knife’?

Pro Tips: Avoid dishwasher for more extended edge durability.

I’ll discuss the in-depth cleaning & maintenance process in the next section.

Cleaning & Maintenance of Victorinox Fibrox Pro Chef’s Knife

You will require little effort to clean this Victorinox Fibrox knife. Though the blade and handle are dishwasher safe – I don’t recommend using dishwasher.

Sometimes Dishwater can damage the knife’s edges when it gets bumped with other materials and results in a dull blade.

For a lesser honing cycle, use your hand while washing this knife.

As the building material is stainless steel, you don’t have to worry if someone put this knife in the sink – knowingly or unknowingly after using/washing.

In conclusion, wash it with your hand and let it dry itself, no intense maintenance needed.

PROS
• Elegant Design With Sturdy Stainless Steel Blade
• Slip Resistant Handle – Ideal Option For People With Oily Palm
• Edges Stay Sharp & Need Honing After Week of Usage
• Suitable For Every Kitchen & Food Type
CONS
• The look is Bit Bland
• As It’s a Lightweight Knife, it’s Not The Best Option For Large Food
